Description of Learning Environment for Students: Wake Forest University Schools of Business offer a rigorous and challenging curriculum with a dedication to educating students in a personalized learning environment. Teamwork, hands-on learning and an integrated curriculum are key components of the learning environment. Since good solutions address more than one part of a problem, the school’s curriculum is integrative, weaving disciplines together instead of isolating them. Students develop a holistic approach to management, analyzing and solving problems by understanding the full range of functional areas. Additionally, the educational approach is multi-faceted and experiential, not passive. Students learn through team-based projects, consulting projects, internships, case competitions, mentoring, distinguished guest speakers and community service projects. When it comes time to crafting a career plan, students have access to an abundance of resources. The Wake Forest Schools of Business Career Management Center staff works with students to assess their career options, refine their goals, network with well-placed corporate contacts and, ultimately, build the career they want. The Mentor Program allows students to learn one-on-one from, and develop a relationship with, a highly regarded professional. The summer internship program gives students practical experience before making long-term career decisions and helps build a network of contacts for students’ full-time job search. Throughout the year, companies conduct information sessions and interviews on campus. The Career Management Center also coordinates attendance at national MBA events and career fairs in search of placement opportunities and offers access to a tight network of alumni who frequently work with the school to fill positions at their firms and network with students. In addition, the Career Management Center offers targeted career preparatory programs, such as intensive career prep immersion weekends, videotaped mock interviews, and club trips to meet key alumni and executives. Faculty: Schools of Business faculty members are dedicated to rigorous MBA education. The faculty is actively engaged in research and publication for leading scholarly journals and 95% of the current full-time faculty holds a Ph.D. or other doctoral degree. Many faculty members also serve as consultants to organizations around the globe and then share their firsthand knowledge of management challenges with students in the classroom. Eighty percent have international teaching or work experience. Because of the deliberately small size of our programs professors quickly come to know students as individuals, providing students with the unique opportunity to develop close and meaningful relationships with our very talented faculty. Faculty profiles, publications and research can be found at www.business.wfu.edu under “Faculty & Research.” Accomplishments/Recognition: Over the years, Wake Forest University business school programs have consistently ranked among the top 50 U.S. graduate business programs in publications such as The Economist, Financial Times, U.S. News & World Report and Forbes. The school has also gained recognition for its entrepreneurial programs and its emphasis on social responsibility. Specific hands-on learning initiatives that have gained recognition are the Marketing Summit, the Elevator Competition and Project Nicaragua. Marketing Summit Each year as part of the student-run Marketing Summit, the graduate business school hosts the nation’s premier marketing case competition, now entering its 20th year. This student-organized event draws teams from major universities throughout this country and around the world. Teams have 36 hours to solve a company’s real-world marketing challenge and present their recommendations to a panel of distinguished judges. Corporate sponsors have included IBM, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, DISH Network, GlaxoSmithKline, Motorola, and Yahoo! Elevator Competition Entrepreneurs reach for the sky in this event, in which teams of MBA students from the world’s best universities take two two-minute elevator rides with venture capitalists, with the goal of pitching a business plan. Winning teams are invited to make more detailed presentations to venture capitalists who are interested in funding student projects. Project Nicaragua and Beyond Project Nicaragua is an ongoing MBA student-driven effort to educate aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners in Nicaragua’s economically deprived areas. This consulting effort developed for Nicaraguan business owners has expanded to a two-day seminar that has been successfully presented in Benin, Africa. Similar seminars are now being rolled out to Native American entrepreneurs in Santa Fe, New Mexico and local NC Hispanic business owners. Military: From admissions to placement, members of the Wake Forest University Schools of Business faculty and staff represent a range of military experience. Because of this, the school has a unique appreciation and understanding of the valuable background military personnel bring to the classroom, team assignments, overall student life, and the workforce. Since the Wake Forest Schools of Business value military candidates’ leadership and life experiences, the school has recently increased its efforts to recruit top applicants that have served in the US Armed Forces. Wake Forest has partnered with the US Veterans Administration to help fund veterans’ tuition under The Yellow Ribbon Program and has established partnerships with several transitions centers, which school representatives are visiting to answer questions about programs and services. We have adjusted our admissions requirements to count years of military service as years of work experience for application purposes. The application fee is waived for military persons who have been on active duty within three years of their application. We are committed to making financial aid available to qualified military personnel who have transitioned from the service in the two years prior to enrolling in their program. A one-year deferment is provided if admitted military students' plans are delayed by their service branch. In addition to current faculty, staff and alumni, the Dean of Business, Steve Reinemund, served five years as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, achieving the rank of captain. Dean Reinemund comes to the Wake Forest University Schools of Business after devoting 23 years of his business career to PepsiCo, where he ultimately served as chairman and CEO. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and he received a Master of Business Administration degree at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia. He currently serves as a trustee of the United States Naval Academy Foundation. Dean Reinemund’s goal for all students is to help each student define his or her calling in life, and grow as a leader in all areas of life. He believes that every individual should be challenged to follow their passion so that their life’s work has significance to them personally, as well as to our society, and that a complete business education must go beyond head knowledge, offering students the environment in which to develop a game plan for life. If interested candidates wish to speak with Wake Forest faculty, staff or an alumnus with prior military experience, please contact Kevin Bender, Associate Director of Graduate Business Admissions, for assistance. Kevin is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve. ![]() |
