Admission Requirements

Each fall, the Full-Time Berkeley-Haas MBA Program enrolls approximately 240 bright, diverse and creative future business leaders. We admit candidates with solid professional experience and leadership potential who come from a wide variety of industries and backgrounds. The school seeks candidates who represent the school’s four defining principles:
  - Question the status quo -we lead by championing new ideas, taking intelligent risks and accepting sensible failures.
  - Confidence without attitude -we lead through trust and collaboration.
  - Students, always -we are a community designed for curiosity and lifelong pursuit of personal and intellectual growth.
  - Beyond yourself -we shape our world by leading ethically and responsibly.

The goal of the application review process is to identify those candidates who are the strongest fit with the program.

Professional Experience
The quality of an MBA program is immeasurably enhanced by the real-world business experience that students bring to the classroom. For this reason, most Berkeley-Haas MBA students have two or more years of full-time professional work experience following the completion of their undergraduate degree. More important, however, is the richness of that experience. When reviewing applications, the admissions office is interested in the career progression and milestones. Two letters of recommendation are required and it is preferred that at least one come from a current employer. The admissions committee is looking for an applicant’s strengths as an employee and potential as a leader.

Academic Aptitude
Past academic performance provides an indication of how an applicant would perform in the academically rigorous Berkeley-Haas program. Candidates may apply to the program if they hold the equivalent of a four-year US bachelor's degree and have not obtained an MBA or comparable degree from another institution. In reviewing transcripts, the committee takes into account your choice of coursework, the rigor of your undergraduate major, the competitiveness of your academic institutions and your grade point average (GPA). Although there is no minimum requirement, a GPA of B (3.0) or better is generally the standard for serious consideration. Your performance on the GMAT is also evaluated, and if required, the TOEFL or IELTS, to assess your ability to succeed academically in the program.

Personal Qualities
The Berkeley-Haas MBA has a distinct culture and seeks applicants who represent the school's four defining principles, which are emphasized in the admissions process and actively integrated into the MBA curriculum. The defining principles are heavily influenced by the school's location in the San Francisco Bay Area — the world's epicenter for innovation and entrepreneurship. And the principles are shaped by the culture of UC Berkeley, a world-class research generator with a legendary atmosphere of fresh thinking.

Program Overview

The Berkeley-Haas MBA Program develops innovative leaders who know how to put new ideas to work, and to do so responsibly.

By leveraging the innovative energy that's ever-present in Berkeley-Haas culture and in the business ecosystem of the San Francisco Bay Area, the program teaches you how to seize opportunities, challenge conventional wisdom, and act creatively.

Anchored in a rigorous general management curriculum, the program gives you the breadth and depth of knowledge to be a leader in any type of organization, including global firms, startups, nonprofits or a business of your own.

Community
Haas, teamwork and collaboration yield great rewards. Students are members of a close-knit, supportive peer network that draws on both shared experiences and a diversity of ideas and backgrounds to build bonds that last a lifetime.

Curriculum
The curriculum is anchored in the fundamentals of general management, from finance and marketing to strategy and organizational behavior. It is designed for deep thinking about current and future management and business issues. Your skills as a leader are developed across multiple dimensions, including lessons in how to deliver strategic, operational and organizational innovations. The new Berkeley Innovative Leader Development (BILD) program ensures every student develops the skills required of innovative leaders. You will develop your innovative leadership skills by taking a required experiential course that will enable you to hone your leadership skills in a real-life setting. You choose at least one of eight programs that focus on applied innovation, international business development, social sector solutions, entrepreneurship and more. Extracurricular activities also provide opportunities for hands-on learning. Your program of study is flexible, allowing customization to suit your interests. There are opportunities for interdisciplinary studies, drawing on the breadth and depth of UC Berkeley and/or opportunities for innovation, inviting you to design your own electives. You will gain skills essential to global aspects of management throughout the curriculum, and in a series of special programs involving international study experiences. The San Francisco Bay Area is an unrivaled business ecosystem known for its innovation, entrepreneurship and forward-moving change — as well as its magnificent scenery, ideal climate and vast array of outdoor activities. Integrated into this ecosystem are the University of California Berkeley and the Haas School of Business, which generate knowledge and ideas through the pioneering work of faculty. And Haas has creatively linked its courses and programs across disciplines at Berkeley. Our faculty are recognized worldwide for their innovative research and thought leadership. In fact, Haas School professor Oliver Williamson was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economics Sciences, the second time in 15 years a Haas professor has received the honor.
